The end of the road

They say it takes 30 days to develop a habit. After getting up every Wednesday morning at 5AM I have to say it is officially a habit. Simple changes in your life can make a huge difference in how we carry ourself how we think about others and how we get treated in return. Doing this project has made a positive change in my life and I love it. I will continue to give back to the community and help those in need on my own time not when told to. I volunteered at a church because it is somewhere I wanted to give my time. It is something that means a lot to me and to be able to do it in a Christian setting was one of the most rewarding things I could have done.

Going Beyond

I found a need and I am trying to fix it. While volunteering I saw that a lot of individuals were asking for employment. So I decided to gather a list places accepting applications and take them with me on Wed. mornings. They were thrilled. I thought this would be a way to help them get a kick start on their morning. The individuals also needed guidance to finding veteran benefits so I personally seek out things to help them and instructions to apply for their veteran benefits. I am glad that I could help them. It really means something when you can take a skill that you obtain and put it to good use helping others.

Another day

When it rains is pours in Norfolk. Those are the days when Miles Memorial Methodist outreach program see the most individuals during breakfast. People want to get inside fast so they come to breakfast. We feed so many and sometimes we run out of food.
The people always are in high spirits! They have positive outlooks and never beat themselves up about the has been's or could haves. This is something I look up to, when the going gets tough they don't get down they keep picking themselves up. That is something that we take for granted, we think it is the end of the world when our car brakes down at an inconvenient time but they sleep on the streets wear clothes when they are dirty and sometimes don't have food to eat. That is something I am grateful that I have.
Volunteering for the outreach program has given me a better insight as to what I have and don't have verses what I need and don't need.

Needs...

I have continued to cook and serve breakfast to the homeless at my nonprofit. I saw my nonprofit as a safe place for the homeless to seek resources, community communication as well as having a good hot breakfast. It has been all of that plus some. We don't just feed them but I can sit down and talk to them getting to know them a little bit better.
I also had an opportunity to help make 100 bag lunches for needy children in the Oceanview area. I never realized that there were children in the area that depended on school meals to eat and that now that school it out they are lucky to receive any food at all. Each bag lunch included 2 sandwiches, 1 bag of chips, 1 sweet snack, and 1 juice. When delivering these there were multiple children asking for more than one for there siblings. It really touched me to know that the outreach program at Miles Memorial Methodist church saw this need and has committed to making an impact on the children in their community.
I am very satisfied in what I am doing for the missions and outreach program. It isn't about the lord enforcing God on the community but it is a group of people with the same beliefs and wanting to make a difference.

Outreach

Currently I am volunteering for the outreach and missions group at Miles memorial Methodist church. I fix and serve food on Wednesday mornings. I love hearing their stories and trying to figure out how we can help them.
